Definition: canary network

A communications network set up to test a new feature or format. In the crypto world, a canary network may be used to test an entirely new blockchain or a new version of an existing blockchain that is going to be split (forked) and employ a new protocol. If the canary network works, the new architecture has passed the test and is on the way to adoption. See canary build and blockchain.
