Definition: buzzword

In the computer industry, a buzzword refers to the latest technology. Because they may sound catchy and leading edge, buzzwords are often overused and abused. For example, at the turn of the century, nanotechnology was extremely popular, and the "nano" term was tacked onto existing processes that had been at microscopic scale for years. To maximize the buzz, organizations even added nano to their corporate names. See cloudwashing.

AI, Metaverse and Crypto
Today, AI is the top buzzword. There is no doubt that a lot of AI development is taking place, but the term is used whenever possible to add a high-tech aspect to a product or system even if only distantly related. Metaverse and crypto were hot in 2022 but died down somewhat in 2023, although countless crypto terms continue to arrive. See AI, metaverse and crypto glossary.

It's Cool to Use a Buzzword
In the beginning, people use cutting edge terms to appear smart (see buzzword compliant). However, if not a flash in the pan, new technologies become mainstream, and the words become everyday vocabulary. See disruptive technology and hot topics and trends.

Hardly Nanoscale
This wireless mouse transceiver from Microsoft was called a NANO TRANSCEIVER because it protrudes only a quarter inch from the USB port. However, it is hardly nano-sized, where products are measured in billionths of a meter. See nanotechnology and process technology.
