In late 2023, a team headed by Feng Guo at Indiana University Bloomington created "Brainware," a brain organoid comprising stem cells attached to a computer chip. Brainware can perform elementary speech recognition, and according to Guo "was the first demonstration of using brain organoids for computing." Biocomputing may lead to eventually making certain forms of AI more powerful and energy efficient.
