(1) In a Wi-Fi network, the continuous transmission of small packets (beacons) that advertise the presence of the base station (see SSID broadcast).

(2) A continuous signaling of an error condition in a token ring network such as FDDI. It allows the network administrator to locate the faulty node. See beacon removal.
