Definition: battery electric vehicle

A vehicle that is driven by electric motors powered by a battery (see electric vehicle and electric vehicle types). Teslas and most EV models on the market are battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

BEV + Gas Engine = PHEV
A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is a hybrid electric vehicle that allows home charging (see PHEV).

Fuel Cell EVs
Nowhere near as popular as BEVs and PHEVs, a fuel cell EV (FCEV) is an electric vehicle powered by the electricity generated from fuel cells. For example, there are less than a hundred fuel cell stations in the U.S. compared to 60,000 EV charging stations. Each charging station has from two to four charging ports. See EV charging and fuel cell.
