Definition: audio tagging

Audio tagging refers to updating the metadata fields in MP3 and other compressed audio files. An audio tag editor is used to correct the metadata in individual files or to apply a category to a group of files. The tag editor may also use music databases to correct erroneous metadata. Access is accomplished by file name as well as from an acoustic fingerprint of its waveforms matched against a waveform database. Contrast with video tagging. See music file identification, acoustic fingerprint, ID3 tags and music search.
