Definition: Xserve

(1) See X server.

(2) An earlier Mac network server from Apple, introduced in 2002 and discontinued in January 2011. The Xserve was a rack-mounted (1U) computer geared for back office and datacenter operation. The first model included a graphics card and optical drive, but they were dropped in the second-generation Xserve Cluster Node intended for server farms. Xserve models were powered by G4 and G5 PowerPC CPUs and later Intel Xeon chips.

Although Apple eliminated the Xserve line, software from Apple can turn any Mac into a server (see OS X Server). See Mac models.
