Definition: Walkman


A brand of portable audio players and recorders from Sony. In 1979, Sony introduced the Walkman audio cassette player and created a revolution. More than 350 million Walkmans were sold, making it one of the most successful consumer electronics products in history. The tape-based device was the progenitor of all the portable tape and disc music players that followed.

The Walkman brand was used for its portable CD player (originally named Discman), Video8 video player, MiniDisc player, MP3 player and Sony Ericsson mobile phones. See audio cassette, MiniDisc and Stereobelt.
