Definition: WINGZ

An earlier spreadsheet for the Mac, Windows and various Unix platforms. Originally developed for the Mac by Innovative Software in 1988, Informix acquired the product and offered it with much fanfare in 1989. In the early 1990s, Apple's Claris division licensed and enhanced WINGZ, renaming it Resolve.

WINGZ was noted for its advanced features ahead of other spreadsheet programs. Modeled after Apple's HyperCard, the WINGZ HyperScript language enabled users to write complex macros, and it eventually was enhanced to access databases, resulting in the program being renamed HyperScript Tools. Later, WINGZ was acquired by the London-based Investment Intelligence Systems Group and then PDF Solutions, which incorporated it into its own products.
