Definition: Visual Studio


An integrated development environment (IDE) from Microsoft for coding Windows applications. Visual Studio is Microsoft's flagship language product, which enables any programming language to be included when constructed as a VSPackage. For example, Visual Studio is used to code programs in C#, C++, Visual Basic, F#, Python and Java.

Discontinued languages are Visual FoxPro, Visual SourceSafe source control language and Visual J++/J#. Visual InterDev, which used Active Server Pages (ASPs) was replaced with Visual Web Designer. See ASP

The Community Edition is a version of Visual Studio freely available to everyone, whereas Visual Studio is a paid product. See Visual Studio .NET and integrated development environment.
