Definition: VMARK

A database and tools vendor founded in 1984 that merged with Unidata to become Ardent Software in 1998. Its first and major product was the UniVerse relational DBMS, which was originally host based and then adapted to client/server. UniVerse has been built into many products developed by other software vendors. In 1995, VMARK acquired the Easel Corporation, which brought with it several client/server development packages for Windows and OS/2. Easel's ObjectStudio Smalltalk environment was later sold to Cincom. See Ardent.
