Definition: Unix server


A medium to large-scale computer system in a network that runs under Unix. Unix servers are widely used as application servers and database servers and are available from a variety of vendors, including Sun, IBM, HP and others. Sun has been the major proponent of Unix computer systems in the commercial world running on its SPARC processors, and The Santa Cruz Operation (SCO) has been the leading vendor of Unix on the Intel platform.
