Definition: Uniswap

A popular decentralized cryptocurrency exchange from Uniswap Labs that runs on the Ethereum network. The Uniswap protocol is a suite of smart contracts that provides peer-to-peer swapping of coins that conform to the common crypto token standard (see ERC-20). The UNI is Uniswap's native currency.

Launched at the end of 2018, within two years, Uniswap was the largest decentralized exchange (DeX) supporting a huge number of crypto wallets, analysis tools, decentralized apps (dApps) as well as aggregators that look for the best market price. It was also the first DeX to employ an automated market maker (AMM) with noteworthy success. By May 2020, Uniswap surpassed $1 trillion in lifetime trading volume. See decentralized exchange.
