Definition: Mastodon


An open source social network development platform. Introduced in 2016, Mastodon allows anyone to create a social networking feed similar to X/Twitter and Tumblr. Although there is a 500-character limit, each Mastodon instance is developed, controlled and moderated by the entity that creates it. Users may communicate only with others in their community or follow users in other communities.

Toots and Boosts (Posts and Reposts)
Mastodon posts (tweets) are called "toots," and reposts (retweets) are boosts.

Truth Social - Truths and Re-Truths
One of the most high-profile Mastodon-related platforms is Truth Social, which uses is a customized version of the Mastodon software. Truth Social is run by the Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) and Digital World Acquisition Corporation (DWAC). Launched initially for iOS users on Presidents' Day, February 21, 2022, Truth Social is a rebirth of Donald Trump's X/Twitter account which was deleted in January 2021 (later restored when Elon Musk acquired Twitter).
