Definition: Thunderbolt Display

Apple's 27" LCD computer monitor, introduced in 2011 and discontinued in 2016. Employing an LED backlight with a 2560x1440 resolution, the Thunderbolt Display (TBD) superseded Apple's LED much coveted 30" Cinema Display and replaced the Mini DisplayPort with the Thunderbolt interface.

The Perfect MacBook Docking Station
The Thunderbolt Display serves as a docking station for Thunderbolt-equipped Mac laptops. The monitor cable includes the MagSafe power connector used on MacBooks, and when Thunderbolt and MagSafe are plugged into the laptop, the Thunderbolt, USB, FireWire and Ethernet ports on the back of the monitor are available to the computer. See Thunderbolt and 5K monitor.

Apple Thunderbolt Display
The Thunderbolt Display (right) is next to Apple's older 30" Cinema Display, which was glare proof. The Thunderbolt is not. After 35 years, 2016 marked the end of stand-alone monitors from Apple.
