"The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist" is a 104-minute documentary about AI that premiered in 2026 at the Sundance Film Festival. Released by American independent film company Focus Features and co-directed by Canadian documentary film directors Daniel Roher and Charlie Tyrell, The AI Doc is the first feature film dedicated to understanding the good and bad of AI since chatbots exploded on the scene. It examines the possible calamities that might occur as well as the huge potential that AI brings to the planet.
A Veritable "Who's Who" in the AI World
The AI Doc primarily conducts interviews with dozens of industry experts including heavyweights such as Sam Altman, Daniela and Dario Amodei, Demis Hassabis, Ilya Sutskever, Yuval Noah Harari and Geoffrey Hinton. It does not get into details of how AI models work and there is very little jargon.
What Is an Apocaloptimist?
An apocaloptimist, pronounced "a-pa-ca-lop-timist," is a person who recognizes the potential harm on the horizon both from AI, climate change and war while maintaining an optimistic outlook that all problems can be solved when everyone works together.
