Definition: TVL

(3) (TeleVision Lines) A measurement of the monochrome resolution of an analog camera or monitor. It is based on the number of distinct lines that can be perceived as separate to the human eye. The TVL is used for analog resolutions and is not the same as the number of camera scan lines; for example, the 525 scan lines in the NTSC standard. See lines of resolution.




An EIA Resolution Chart
This is the center of a 1956 chart from the Electronic Industries Alliance. When viewed on screen, the point where the lines are no longer visually distinct is the TVL measurement. A TVL of 750 is approximately equivalent to 960 pixels.
