(2) A surround sound system for movie theaters and home theaters from THX, Ltd., San Rafael, California, a spin-off of Lucasfilm, Ltd. Compatible with Dolby Digital and DTS, THX was developed during "Return of the Jedi" and named after "THX 1138," George Lucas' first film in 1982.

THX was also called the "Tomlinson Holman eXperiment" because Holman was technical director and responsible for theater acoustics. THX includes a custom design for each theater auditorium as well as special speakers and electronics. The company is a major player in digital cinema technology.

Homes and Cars
THX home theater certification states devices meet the criteria in each area of the audio/video chain, including DVD players, audio equalizers, A/V receivers, amplifiers, speakers and cables. In 2003, the first THX car system was installed in a Lincoln sport sedan. See Dolby Digital and DTS.
