An earlier Java-based office suite originally from Sun, which Oracle acquired in 2010, that ran under Solaris, Windows and Linux. Supporting Microsoft and other file formats, StarOffice had a full set of business applications plus browser, HTML and image editors, news client, email and PIM.
Workplace and Java Runtime
All StarOffice apps were launched from a common Workplace window. In order to ensure there was a Java interpreter in the user's machine, it came with its own Java Runtime. Originally a free service, StarOffice moved to a revenue-based model. See
