An earlier family of flash memory cards from Sony. Introduced in 1998, Memory Stick storage was used in digital cameras, camcorders and other devices. Starting at 4MB and 8MB capacities, the original Memory Stick reached a maximum of 128MB; however, a Memory Select version switched between two 128MB banks. See flash memory.

The First Memory Stick
Looking like a short stick of chewing gum (top), the Sony cards were very compact in the late 1990s. In 2004, the smaller Duo cards (bottom) used the same slot with an adapter. (Bottom image courtesy of Sony Corporation.)

Sony PRO Formats
In 2003, the PRO Duo format increased capacity to 32GB. PRO-HG was faster and Pro-HG Duo was designed for HD camcorders. Pro formats eventually reached gigabyte capacity. See also Video HD.

Micro Format
The Memory Stick Micro was used in smartphones and could be plugged into a Duo slot with an adapter.
