Definition: Silicon Alley

The areas in New York City known for their high-tech startups. Silicon Alley started out in the Flatiron District (23rd Street and Fifth Avenue) and trailed down through Soho (South of Houston Street) to the Financial District at the southern tip of Manhattan. The Alley moniker loosely referred to Broadway, which connects mid-Manhattan to lower-Manhattan. However, after the dot-com bubble burst in the early 2000s, tech companies began to proliferate throughout all of Manhattan as well as areas in Brooklyn, including Dumbo (down under the Manhattan Bridge overpass). See Silicon Valley and high-tech regions.
