(South by SouthWest) A music, film and emerging technology festival held annually in Austin, Texas by SXSW Inc. It started in 1987 as a music festival and grew to the largest of its kind in the world with more than 2,000 performers and bands.
The technology focus began as the SXSW Film and Multimedia Conference in 1994, which was renamed SXSW Interactive in 1999. After Twitter, now X, was unveiled in 2007, SXSW gained more notoriety as a venue to demo the next great technology product. At the 10-day event in March 2018, there were approximately 2,000 conferences, 75,000 attendees and 5,000 speakers. More than 100 countries were represented.
