Definition: MIPS Technologies


(MIPS Technologies, Inc., Mountain View, CA) Founded in 1984 as MIPS Computer Systems Inc., the company merged with SGI in 1992 and spun off as an independent entity once again in 2000. In 2013, MIPS was acquired by Imagination Technologies and then by Wave Computing in 2018.

MIPS designs RISC-based microprocessors that are made under license by various companies. They have been widely used in many products, including printers, copiers, DVDs and digital TVs.

SGI computers used to be powered by MIPS CPUs, and earlier chips used an "R" designation as in R3000, R4000, R5000, etc. Subsequently, chip models fell into MIPS32 and MIPS64 families. See SGI.
