Definition: R1T

A luxury electric pickup truck from Rivian. With first deliveries in 2021, the R1T was the first all-electric pickup in the consumer market. Depending on model, it has a range of 250 to 400 miles. The R1T was designed for off-road traveling, weighing nearly 7,000 pounds with either two or four electric motors. The quad-motor model delivers 835 horsepower with a 400-mile range and 11,000 pound towing capacity.

A Rocky Start
Although R1T owners love their trucks, expectations were too high. The R1T had production bottlenecks, initial reliability issues, a high price for a pickup ($70K range) and Rivian stock fell through the roof. However, by 2025, the situation improved. Its R1S SUV is highly praised, and the company is readying a less-expensive pickup, the model R2. See electric vehicle and F-150 Lightning.

The Gear Tunnel
A most unusual feature of the R1T is the gear tunnel with LED lights and 12-volt plugs, The tunnel provides waterproof storage for, as Rivian puts it: "sandy beach blankets and slushy snowboards." The lockable tunnel doors contain hidden compartments and are strong enough to sit on. (Image courtesy of Rivian.)
