A household vacuum cleaner that cleans the floor without user intervention other than emptying the dustbin. Sensors on "robovacs" avoid objects and walls while cleaning. Battery-operated units are charged in a base station and automatically find their way back when their containers are filled or they need recharging. Initially for vacuuming only, robotic cleaners were enhanced to also mop the floor. The first robotic cleaner was the Electrolux Trilobite in 1996.
The Roomba j7+ Vacuum and Mop
Since 2002 and with dozens of models, iRobot's Roomba is the most widely known robovac. In fact, like iPad and tablet, Roomba became synonymous with robotic cleaners.
