(Project
Connected
Home over
IP) A specification for unifying current and future smart home products using the IP protocol. Announced in late 2019, Project CHIP was a coalition of major hardware and software companies, including Google, Amazon, Apple, Samsung and the ZigBee Alliance. CHIP was renamed Matter in 2021 (see
Matter).
Today, smart home products use multiple protocols such as X10, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee and Z-Wave with little interoperability between them. In the first CHIP specification, Wi-Fi, Thread and Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) were the wireless protocols. See
Wi-Fi,
Bluetooth LE and
Thread.
