Definition: PartitionMagic

A utility for hard drive organization from Symantec that allows disk partitions to be changed on the fly without destroying existing data. Officially "Norton PartitionMagic," this highly praised product runs in Windows clients up to, but not including Vista, and supports FAT, NTFS and EXT 2/3 (Linux) file systems. In 2009, the software was no longer sold but downloads exist on the Web. Prior to products such as this, the DOS Fdisk utility was used to repartition a hard disk, and all data were lost in the process. PartitionMagic was originally introduced in 1995 by PowerQuest Corporation, which was acquired by Symantec in 2003. See partition.
