Definition: PICMG

(PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group) An industry consortium that develops specifications for backplanes and interconnects for electronic equipment in the industrial and telecom fields. PICMG defines the electrical and mechanical specifications for these hardware platforms, not the protocols used to transport signals over them. Founded in 1994, the PICMG acronym later became the official name of the organization.

PICMG's first specification was a PCI card and backplane that extended the PCI bus, only just appearing inside desktop PCs at that time, to the industrial world. It subsequently developed CompactPCI, AdvancedTCA and other technologies. See PCI-SIG, CompactPCI and AdvancedTCA.
