Definition: OpenAL

(OPEN Audio Library) A cross-platform 3D audio programming interface available for Windows, Mac, Linux, Unix and game consoles. Originally developed by Loki Software, OpenAL is available as open source and also under license from Creative Labs. An alternative to Microsoft's DirectSound interface, OpenAL supports Creative Labs environmental extensions (see EAX). For more information, visit www.openal.org. See OpenGL and 3D audio.

Windows Sound APIs
This is the relationship between OpenAL and the sound programming interfaces (APIs) from Microsoft. The MMSystem was developed for Windows 3.x.
