A high-capacity removable hard disk system from the former Castlewood Systems, Inc., Pleasanton, CA. Introduced in late 1998 with a capacity of 2.2GB and a 12MB transfer rate, ORB drives used magnetoresistive (MR) read/write head technology. Castlewood was a private company founded by Syed Iftikar, the founder of SyQuest and co-founder of Seagate. The company declared bankruptcy and ceased operation in 2004. See magnetic disk
Castlewood pushed the removable storage envelope further with its ORB drive, which was introduced at $199. Its $29.95 cartridges were considerably lower than the competition.
