Definition: OBC


(OnBoard Charger) The hardware component in electric vehicles that charges the battery. EVs have both AC and DC onboard chargers. The AC OBC allows the car to be charged at home with regular house current or at an AC charging station. The DC OBC charger enables the vehicle to be charged at a Level 3 DC charging station. Most plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) have only an AC OBD, while some have both AC and DC. See EV charging.
