Definition: Symantec


(Symantec Corporation, Cupertino, CA) A software company founded in 1982 by Dr. Gary Hendrix. Symantec was acquired by C&E Software in 1984 and released its Q&A file manager the following year. In 1990, it merged with Peter Norton Computing, developer of the well-known Norton Utilities and became a specialist in consumer security.

For several years following, Symantec acquired more than a dozen companies, including Central Point Software, maker of PC Tools, and Zortech, developer of C++ compilers. In December 2004, Symantec and Veritas Software Corporation announced a merger with the combined company operating as Symantec.

In 2015, Symantec split into two with Symantec focusing on security, and with a name revival, Veritas Technologies, which would deal with information technology. A year later, Veritas was sold to The Carlyle Group private equity firm.

In 2019, Broadcom acquired Symantec's Enterprise Security division, which became NortonLifeLock. After a merger with Avast in 2022, NortonLifeLock became Gen Digital Inc. See Broadcom.
