Definition: Norton Utilities

Norton Utilities is a package of widely used programs for Windows and Mac that is used to fine tune the machine. It includes functions to restore deleted files, diagnose disks for corrupted data, defragment the disk and clean up changes to the Registry. Norton Utilities is available as a separate product or part of various suites. Originally from Peter Norton Computing and introduced for DOS, these programs were the first to popularize disk utilities for the PC.

Peter Norton
Peter Norton was the first person to become widely known for utility programs. The floppy disk and automobile lift on this 1988 booklet cover illustrated the concept of fine tuning a computer to keep it running well. (Image courtesy of Peter Norton.)
