Officially the Conference and Workshop on Neural Information Processing Systems, and initially known as "NIPS," NeurIPS has been held every year in locations worldwide since 1987. Initially sponsored by the IEEE and then the NeurIPS Foundation, NeurIPS was created for researchers to explore both biological and artificial neural networks.
Along with machine learning, the topics explored are neuroscience, cognitive science, psychology and linguistics. Researchers are also recognized by invitations to speak. Every year, the proceedings are published in book form and combined physical and virtual attendance varies from seven to more than 20,000 people. The 2025 conference is held in December in San Diego.
