Definition: NEVI

(National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure) A part of the federal $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) of 2021. NEVI funds a nationwide network of EV charging stations, mostly along national highways. The goal is to have a half million charging ports in the U.S. by 2030, which equates to approximately a hundred thousand new EV charging stations. As of 2025 in the U.S., there are roughly 200 thousand gas stations and 60 thousand EV stations.

Officially the NEVI Formula Program, $5 billion was allocated to the states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico over five years. Enacted under the Biden administration, and although $3.27 billion had been allocated to the state transportation agencies, the second Trump administration suspended the program.

The lack of charging locations across rural areas of the country has been an impediment to EV sales. In addition, it takes longer to recharge a battery than to fill a gas tank. However, because most EV owners charge their vehicles at home, electric vehicle sales continue to rise. See EV charging.
