Definition: Mixed Mode CD

A Compact Disc (CD) format that contains both data and audio. The data are stored in track 1, and audio is stored in the remaining tracks. Newer audio CD players will skip the first track upon encountering the data, while earlier players will attempt to play the non-audio data, causing a loud, raucous sound that can damage the speakers. Since Mixed Mode recording is done in a single session, old non-multisession CD-ROM drives will support it. See also mixed mode.
