Definition: Miracast

A protocol that streams the screen content from Miracast-enabled devices to a TV, projector or monitor that either supports Miracast or has an adapter plugged in (see below). Supporting 1080p video, 5.1 surround sound and Wi-Fi Direct for wireless transmission, Miracast is the non-Apple equivalent of Apple's AirPlay protocol. The first Miracast devices were certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance in 2012. See Wi-Fi Direct and screen mirroring.

Microsoft's Miracast Device
Miracast adapters connect to the external screen via HDMI for signal and USB for power. This Microsoft adapter enables Windows devices to mirror their screen on a TV, video projector or monitor (see Wireless Display Adapter). (Image courtesy of Microsoft Corporation.)
