The AI research division of Meta Platforms. Founded in 2013 as Facebook AI Research (FAIR) because Facebook had not yet changed its name until 2021, Meta AI is involved in developing models for chatbots, computer vision and language translation.
In 2023, Facebook stickers debuted allowing users to create AI-generated images to paste into WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and Facebook Stories. AI is also used to optimize Meta's content and perform agent and chatbot-like functions in Messenger such as booking a venue, sending gifts and answering general questions. In that same year, Meta launched its first LLaMa model, which was the beginning of a long line of AI chatbots. See
SeamlessM4T and
LLaMa.
In the mid-2020s, Meta released new AI models, brought generative AI into its social apps and began building AI training infrastructure at a much larger scale. For example, in 2024, Meta broke ground for another AI data center in Louisiana (see
Hyperion data center).
