Definition: Maia chip
An AI accelerator designed by Microsoft. Maia chips are used along with NVIDIA GPUs in the company's Azure cloud computing service. Unlike a GPU, the Maia chips are designed for AI only and not graphics rendering. See Microsoft SQ, Cobalt 100 and Microsoft Azure.
Maia 100 AI Chip
In 2023, Microsoft introduced its first AI processor for AI training and inference. In 2026, the Maia 200 was launched for mostly inference. The Maia 100 has more than 100 billion transistors, and the Maia 200 has more than 140 billion. (Image courtesy of Microsoft Corporation.)
