Definition: Magstar MP


(Magstar MultiPurpose) A magnetic tape technology from IBM for midrange systems. Introduced in 1996, Magstar MP used 5GB and 7GB dual-hub 8mm tape cartridges designed for fast picking in a robotic library. The tape head starting point was positioned halfway into the tape. Magstar MP was not as widely used as Magstar. See magnetic tape and Magstar.




Magstar MP and Magstar
Magstar MP used dual-hub 8mm cartridges that started mid-tape, while Magstar used a half-inch single-hub cartridge.
