Definition: Magstar MP

(Magstar MultiPurpose) A magnetic tape technology from IBM for midrange systems. Introduced in 1996, Magstar MP uses 5GB and 7GB dual-hub 8mm tape cartridges designed for fast picking in a robotic library. The tape head starting point is positioned halfway into the tape. Magstar MP was not as widely used as the Magstar line. See magnetic tape and Magstar.

Magstar MP and Magstar are different technologies. Magstar MP uses dual-hub 8mm cartridges that start mid-tape, while Magstar uses a half-inch single-hub cartridge.
