Definition: Mac emulator


(1) Software for a Mac that runs applications from another platform. See Rosetta, VMware Fusion and Parallels Desktop.

(2) Software that allowed Mac applications to run in a foreign environment, typically Windows. Generally capable of running only applications from earlier Mac operating systems, examples were SoftMac2000, vMac and Executor. A copy of the Mac's ROM chip may have been required to run the emulator.
