Definition: Lumia

A family of smartphones from Nokia that were based on Microsoft's Windows Phone platform. Introduced in 2011, the Lumia line was a vast departure from the look and feel of iPhones and Androids, both of which started an explosion in smartphone sales three years earlier.

High-end Lumia models came with Nokia applications that offered free music streaming and turn-by-turn navigation. In addition, apps highlighted restaurants, shops and events in the local area as well as offered suggestions for downloading new apps.

From Symbian to WinPhone to Android
Nokia had switched from its flagship Symbian operating system to Windows Phone, and Nokia's phone division was owned by Microsoft from 2013 to 2017. When Nokia was no longer part of Microsoft and Windows Phones were abandoned, Nokia introduced smartphones for the Android platform. See Windows Phone and PureView.

The Lumia 900
Lumia models were well received due to their Windows Phone interface. The large icons were often configured as "live tiles" that updated in real time. In this example, the photos cycled from an internal folder, while the bottom right tile indicated there were 14 new emails.
