Definition: NACS

(North American Charging Standard) Tesla's electric vehicle charging port, known as the J3400 standard. Adopted by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in 2023, NACS is replacing the non-Tesla J1772 charger, although J1772 is expected to be supported for the foreseeable future.

Better for AC Charging
NACS is capable of AC charging up to 277 volts of AC current, compared to 240 volts with J1772. The 277 volts is adaptable to apartment houses and offices with three-phase 480-volt service. Although commercial charging stations use DC, most battery charging is done at home using AC current. See J1772, EV charging and EV Plug and Charge.
