Definition: Internet modem


The network device that enables access to the Internet. One end of the Internet modem connects to the coaxial, telephone or fiber optic cable that comes into the home or building from the Internet service provider (ISP). The other end of the modem connects via Ethernet to a wired router or more likely, to a wireless router, the most common networking device in every Internet-connected home.
