Definition: IP network

A network that uses the IP protocol, which is part of the TCP/IP protocol suite. IP has become the global standard for networking, which includes the entire Internet, many of the data and voice networks of the telephone carriers, as well as nearly all private Ethernet and Wi-Fi networks. Any network that has not migrated to the IP protocol is considered a "legacy network." Windows PCs are integrated into an IP network using NetBIOS over TCP/IP, which supports the Windows system for assigning names to machines. See TCP/IP and legacy network.
