Definition: IEEE


(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields. Founded in 1963, it has more than 360,000 individual members in more than 150 countries and is involved with setting standards for computers and communications.

The Computer Society of the IEEE is the largest of the IEEE's 39 member societies with nearly 100,000 members itself. Over 40 per cent of them live and work outside the U.S., which gives it a strong international focus. Meetings, technical conferences, working committees and the latest computing research are areas of emphasis.
