Definition: ICRA

(Internet Content Rating Association) An organization dating back to 1994 that was created to protect children from potentially harmful online content and to protect free speech on the Internet. ICRA did not rate websites or label the content. Rather, it provided the rating system based on the PICS standard, and sites rated themselves by filling out an online questionnaire. Parents adjusted the content settings on their children's Web browsers to their own level of comfort. In 2007, ICRA's purpose and mission was broadened into the newly created Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI). See RSAC and FOSI.
