Definition: High Sierra


(1) The first CD-ROM file system, named for an area near Lake Tahoe where it was developed in 1985. See ISO 9660.

(2) Version 10.13 of the Mac operating system, introduced in 2017. High Sierra features support for the HEVC video standard and incorporates Apple's new file system (see HEVC and APFS). There are a number of Safari enhancements, including faster JavaScript execution, autoplay blocking and intelligent tracking for privacy. Mail has a split view, uses less storage and incorporates Spotlight for searching messages. Photos has better facial recognition, synchronization, enhanced editing and integration with printing sites. Siri has been improved with a more natural voice, and graphics rendering with Metal 2 is faster for video editing and virtual reality (see Metal for Mac). FaceTime users can snap a Live Photo.
