Definition: HTTPS Everywhere

A browser extension that retrieves Web pages using the secure (encrypted) HTTPS protocol rather than the non-secure HTTP. Introduced first for the Firefox browser in 2010 and later for the Chrome browser, HTTPS Everywhere sets the connection to HTTPS for all the pages in a website that support it.

A collaboration of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and The Tor Project, HTTPS Everywhere uses "rulesets" coded in XML. They define which websites use HTTPS, and thousands of rulesets come with the extension. Users can add their own, and there are utilities that create the ruleset code. See HTTPS, SSL, EFF, Tor and HTTP.
