Definition: Vim


(1) (Vi IMproved) A customizable open source text editor written by Bram Moolenaar with versions for all major operating systems including Windows on x86 and ARM CPUs. Released in the early 1990s, Vim is an enhanced version of the Unix vi editor and is mostly compatible with it. Vim is command driven but offers a GUI option (gVim) for common commands. The editor can be customized with macros and key commands, and it accepts plug-ins written in vimscript (a.k.a. VimL) for added functionality. See vi.

(2) (VIM) (Vendor Independent Messaging or Virtual Inter-application Messaging) An earlier programming interface developed by Lotus, Novell, IBM and others that enabled applications to link to VIM-compliant email systems such as cc:Mail. See cc:Mail.
